There is much information about getting good tone at http://www.thegearpage.net/board/forumdisplay.php?f=53
I recommend that you read some of the Zoom related threads there or create your own account (free) and ask questions.

I'm not sure what you mean. If you explore the Z pedal you will not see any wah effects. You must select a wah in one of the eight slots and then select Custom for the Z pedal. Now you can assign functions of the wah to the various Z pedal movements.

You can get around the Tap Being Down problem by using a switch that lets you have tap held down all the time.
For example, get a normally closed SPST switch and wire tap to it, or a DPDT switch and wire tap to the two lugs that are active automatically. By default then, the Tap button is pressed. So, the patch down/up switches will work as Patch Select instead of Scroll. The new tap switch will set tempo when the switch is released rather than when the switch is pressed. You won't know the difference when using the tap switch. To get Scroll as well, you'll need to use the G3 three footswitches and wire them to your external box. Instructions are in the mod pages of this site.

Hi, sorry if I never answered this. Try disconnecting the plugs for the patch select external box from the G3. Do the top row buttons work now? If yes, then problem is likely with wiring in the plugs that plug into the G3 or the enclosure with your switches. It's probably a ground issue where some wire that is not supposed to be connected to a ground *is* connected to a ground. To find out which wire(s) is the problem you have to systematically remove them from the circuit and then test the circuit until the top row buttons do not turn off.
