I seen the modification on the Zoom Expression Pedal you have on your site, very informative, I might add.
I am constructing a pedal of my own. Could you please advise me on the value of the potentiometer used in the
Zoom FP-02 Expression Pedal ?

ashbass reply:
My meter says 95-96 from several positions. So, I'd go with 100k. There is "1A2" on the little circuit board that the control is attached to. Maybe that means Audio taper.

Please advice:
If I set the individual effects parameters in stompbox mode, remembers G5 this settings even when turned off and turned on again?

ashbass reply:
Yes, both the G5 and G3/X can be set to remember whatever changes you make to an effect or a patch without you having to manually save changes. A setting in the Global menu lets you turn this feature on/off.

Have you tried the newer FP02M Expression Pedal. It appears to be like the FP-02 Silver that you say you like best.

ashbass reply:
I didn't know about it. Looks like the same as the current silver pedal but with a metal chassis. The 'm' of FP02M surely means 'metal'.

If it's got the same physical range between toe-down and heel-down I'd go for it over the plastic one I have now. They're not available yet it appears after a quick search. Thanks for the head's up.

can i buy these switches for the g5?

ashbass reply:
The pedals aren't sold in stores. I made the foot pedals with parts that I bought online from parts sellers. See the "Mod Examples" page to see how other people have put these ideas to use.

There are two steps to the mod process. First, the new switch boxes need to be made. Then the G5 needs to be opened and some wires soldered together. I can make you the switch boxes and have them all ready to go for when the G5 wiring is finished. I'll send instructions on how to do the G5 wiring.

If you send me your G5, I can do both steps and return the pedal to you. If you can't send me your G5 then I can only do the switch boxes as stated above. If you're still interested, email me at ashbass@ashbass.com and we'll talk about it.

Hi! This is the guy that bought your 540R-Faces guitar in September. Just wanted to let you know that I love the guitar! I just finished putting a professional clear coat on it, and replaced the pickups with a Dimarzio PAF Joe and a Mo Joe. It looks and plays great. It will be played and enjoyed for years to come. Thanks again!

ashbass reply:
I'm glad you're happy with it, Chris.

Great mods & thanks a ton for sharing.

Wondering - There's gotta be a way to switch the tap tempo button from hold-down mode to tap mode with a separate switch. (?)

A parallel feed out to a switch the same kind/type as the Tap Tempo in the G3 ?

ashbass reply:
There sure is. That is the method used in the Zoom G3 G3X Firmware v2.0 ashbass Patch Select Mod. Al's comment below specifically wanted to lock the Tap button in the 'pressed' position and thus avoid having to wire things up with 4-conductor jacks, plugs, and cable. See the user mods page and read what user Moat did for his G3. The first link above will take you to the full mod instructions and video. Here is an image with a toggle switch to engage or disengage the Tap button:

Hi, thanks for the G3 v2.0 patch update info. I made the 2 button footswitch according to your plans, works great. I updated to v2.0, and it's lost it's functionality. I was wondering, can I still use my pedal, without instaling the toggle switch you have installed? I really don't need the tap mode. Can I just rig my current pedal to have the tap button be pressed when I press my patch up/down buttons? Obviously I would need a 4th wire, but where would I place that 4th wire from the tap button to my footswitch? Thanks again.

ashbass reply:
If you're willing to lock the Tap key down there is very little that you need to change in the original ashbass Patch Select Mod. You'll need a small bit of wire to connect the Tap solder spots to each other inside the G3. Do that and you're done. The Scroll/PatchSelect buttons will now do Patch Select only and your foot pedal extension will act the same. Here's an image:

How does your patch select mod work with the new 2.0 firmware? I'm afraid to apply the new firmware update because I like the way the patch select mod works :-).

ashbass reply:
I've worked on a G3 lately and have an updated ashbass Patch Select Mod for firmware v2.00. You can see the instructions and a video here.

I've been researching a good MFX pedal and am now between the Zoom G5 and the Digitech RP1000. To be honest your mods are the only reason why the G5 is still in the running. Still leery about dropping coin on the RP1000 as it is a 3 year old product that will likely be ousted from digitech support rathe quickly.

All that being said, I've noticed you have been using stero jacks and cable for you switches. Is there any reason why you havent tried using CAT5 or Phone cable. This would allow you to have only 1 jack and cable to mess with and would give more than enough imput wires to do all your mods all with 1 jack and wire.

Just a thought.

ashbass reply:
Well, when I started I only had one idea: the patch select mod for the G3. I only needed three wires to make it work so that project got stereo jacks, plugs, and cable. Then I did the Tap Rhythm mod for the G3 and again only needed three wires. Now with the G5 I could have combined the two mods into one multi-conductor jack/plug setup but I'm comfortable with how what I have works. I'd need to get a larger switch box, make new graphics, and find out how to mount the new jacks to the G5 and switch box. Then along comes another mod idea (G5 Scroll Button Mod for instance) and my perfect one jack, one plug, one cable system gets tossed on its head. So that's why.

Your idea is a good one and will be much more tidy than my multi-cable approach. If you go with the G5 and put the mods together with CAT5 or Phone cable send me a couple of pictures so I can add them to the Mod Examples page.

Great mod, I'm in the process of doing the G3 patch mod. Thanks for the detailed info. I wanted to ask, the momentary switches need to be "closed" type, correct? I bought 2 "normally open" switches, and the patches just quickly scroll through without stopping, unless I press and hold one of the switches, which makes the scrolling stop, but it starts again after I let go of the button. I found an old switch I had laying around, and it works perfectly, so I would imagine it's a "closed" type. Does that make sense? Thanks again!

ashbass reply:
I can't speak to the Open or Closed question, but the switches need to be momentary on when pressed and then off when released. If the switch 'stays on' as your first example suggests then I think you have a locking switch. As you've found out, that doesn't work well. So your new switch seems to be non-locking.
