Standard encoding makes the image display  
from top to bottom when viewed on the Internet.  
 
Progressive encoding allows viewers to see a  
rough copy of the image as it downloads. The  
file sharpens as the image loads.  
 
Compression loses some of the original data  
by exploiting the fact that small changes in  
color are less noticeable than changes in  
brightness.
