The Zoom FP-01 Vol/Exp Pedal
Comments

This is the older model pedal for Zoom effects. It can function as a volume pedal or as an expression pedal depending on what jack(s) you plug into on the front panel. Mine says "Made in Italy" on the rear where the end of the pedal touches. The FP-02 says "Made in Japan" on its front panel.

As a volume pedal (not connected to an effect) it has a dial control on the side that sets the lowest volume you want the pedal to reach. This way when you close the pedal (heel down) you can still hear your guitar based on the level you set with the dial. In my experience, even with the dial set to its maximum I could only hear the faintest of signal through my amps when I closed the pedal. If I had a gain pedal turned on as well, this function was usefull and I could go from a rhythm volume up to a lead volume easily. This won't replace my Goodrich volume pedal.

As an expression pedal it does much better. The sweep is huge though. You get 2 inches of clearance at the front and 1.25 inches at the back. Compared to my vintage Cry Baby with its 1 inch clearance in front and .5 inch in back I felt like I was wobbling around like a palm tree in a huricane as I used the FP-01 for expression.

I use it with a Zoom G3 and the G3 lets you customize the high and low values for the pedal's sweep. I tried the wah effects out, of course. The Cry Baby model was pretty good after I narrowed down the active sweep area. If I keep this one I'll likely block it in the front or back so that there is not so much travel allowed.

It is made of plastic and is very light weight. The bottom panel is aluminum, and the bolt that the pedal rocks on is metal so it's not all plastic. I like the lightness of it actually because it is easy to move around as I move around when playing.

Another win for me is that there is not a dedicated cable attached to it. I can put whatever length cable I want between it and my G3. Not so with Zoom's more recent FP-02 expression pedal.

I added a shim under the back of the pedal so that it was more on level with my Cry Baby wah.

The FP-01 pedals were made in Italy. The "Made in Italy" branding is found at the rear of the pedal. The first image below is a line up of FP-01 pedals. The second image focus on the branding. It was difficult to get a good photo of the brandings. The image shows the "Made in Italy" text and for each pedal, the word "Italy" has a rough scrape on it that makes the word difficult to see. It looks like someone rubbed sandpaper to cover up "Italy".
